How times have changed. Graham Brady, shadow schools minister, told a fringe meeting at this week’s Conservative party conference that the National Union of Teachers, once the Tories’ chief education bugbear, were “the most helpful of the teaching unions as far as the opposition is concerned”. John Bangs, the NUT’s head of education and favourite to win the union’s impending general secretary election, flinched.
