Tories left out of equal opportunity

David Cameron may love Tony Blair but there is now a certain froideur between Conservative and other members of the education select committee.

The three Tories insisted on writing a minority report on the Government’s white paper reforms, their intransigence prompting a Lib-Dem member to liken their behaviour to that of student Trots. Now it appears that not one of the Tory trio intended to go on this week’s planned trip to look at special schools in Spain and Holland. (One confessed privately she hadn’t “bonded ” with other members.) But then the Whips stepped in. After last week’s humiliating defeat of the Government by one vote, their business managers have been checking on all select committee visits to see if they include equal numbers of government and Opposition members. This didn’t, so they stopped it. Let us hope committee members use their extra time at Westminster to kiss and make up.
