The toughest start in Scotland

A report on standards and quality in Glasgow points out that the city continues to have a higher level of disadvantage than any other authority.

Twice the national average of children are on free meals and in some chools the figure runs to three times the Scottish level.

The academic signs are positive, however. Standard grade results are steadily improving, while Higher results are stable. Attendance is also up.
