READERS may think that when it comes to little grey cells, civil servants can be found wanting. Now it’s official!

As part of a special series of University Challenge, a team representing the back-room brains behind the Prime Minister’s Cabinet Office proved no match for trade union officials, losing by 120 points to 150.

The Trades Union Congress team - including Paul Mackney, general secretary of lecturers’ union Natfhe - now go through to the quarter-finals, screened on July 7.

A victorious Mr Mackney said: “We went there without being particularly competitive, so it was a great surprise when we won.I think it just shows that the TUC has a better grasp on reality than the Cabinet Office.”

A Cabinet Office spokeswoman said: “The team was gutted.”
