Traditional lag

I was interested in the findings of Professor Burghes on mathematics (TES, March 15) because my own research showed that, despite the recommendations of Cockcroft and the requirements of GCSE coursework, mathematics is still largely taught by traditional methods.

If we lag behind other countries then I suggest he looks for other causes, because it seems that many mathematics teachers have found it difficult or impossible to incorporate so-called progressive methods into their teaching.
