A PE teacher drowned during a school white water rafting trip in Australia. Ian Robinson, games master and deputy head of the lower school at Merchant Taylors’ independent boys’ school in Crosby, Merseyside, had organised the trip as part of a rugby tour. The group of 24 boys, aged 15 to 17, and three other teachers, were rafting on the Tully River south of Cairns in Queensland when the accident happened. One of the rafts capsized and Mr Robinson became trapped under a rock. The group is flying back a week early.
David Cook, the headteacher, said Mr Robinson had taught at the school since 1984. “He was an immensely hard-working and caring professional,” he said.
