Steve Canning’s assertion that universities, in their initial teacher training role, are “massively out of date” (TES, January 30) encourages me to suggest he should temper his language to enhance rather than undermine cooperation.

The very swift changes he refers to - mostly at outsiders’ behest - are not always questioned by solely school-based initial training routes. It is often left to higher education to equip trainees with sufficient critical reflection to enable them to unpick government prescription and help them to evolve as something more than mere teaching technicians.
