Organ transplantation has become a big medical success story, but the desperate need for donor organs is often forgotten. To highlight this and enthuse the scientists and surgeons of the future, the British Society of Immunology is running a competition on the theme “Talking Transplants”, closing date May 31.

GCSE and Standard Grade students are invited to design a leaflet for teenagers facing kidney transplantation about what they can expect before and after the operation, while A-level, GNVQ, and Higher students are asked to write a magazine article about the emerging science of animal-to-human transplantation and its social and ethical implications. Winners receive Pounds 150 in cash and a plaque for their school. Details: Kirstie Urquhart, BSI, Broomhill Road, London SW18 4HX. Tel: 0181 875 2400.
