Transport costs more than double

COUNCILS last year spent around pound;370 million on school transport, with costs increasing by more than 53 per cent in the English counties, according to the County Council Network. The Local Government Association is now planning an inquiry into school transport. It moots a system where everybody pays for the first three miles of a journey to school or college. Beyond that, all travel would be free.
