Travel made easy

Hull City council's innovative project, Getting There! designed to promote independent travel for young people with special needs is going nationwide.

There will be free seminars in London (Sept 22), Birmingham (Oct 2) and, provisionally in Sheffield (Oct 10). The project consists of an imaginative story written by Hull college lecturer Sarah Johnson, and a teaching pack which has been successfullypiloted in Teskey King special school, Hull.

Using a mixture of group discussions, tasks and role-play, 14 to 19-year-olds learn about safety, how to plan journeys, handle money, understand timetables and maps, and how to improve their communication skills.
