DAVID Blunkett’s assault on the parents of children who do not go to school is wrongly aimed.
Children bunk off not because of anything their parents do or fail to do, and certainly not be-cause they are “bad”, but because for them school has become so frightening, boring or unprofitable that, like any other human being, they yearn to escape.
The answer is to create attractive, safe alternatives where youngsters can be relieved of the pressure of normal school life.
Schools whose pupils do not attend regularly should look at themselves, not the absentees. If schools want all their pupils to attend all the time they must be places children want to go to.
