Half of the parents threatened with a fast track to court over their child’s truancy have started to get their son or daughter back into school, the Government said this week. After 25 years of a “wishy-washy approach” to behaviour and discipline, Labour’s new “get tough” policy was finally making an impact, junior education minister Ivan Lewis said. Local Government Association research shows that nearly 5,400 parents were summoned to court over truancy across 93 LEAs last year. In four out of five cases, the parent was found guilty.
