London schools have cut truancy 20 times faster than the rest of England, government statistics show. They have reduced the proportion of half-days missed through unauthorised absence by 0.2 percentage points, compared to 0.01 nationally. Ivan Lewis, junior education minister, said the figures meant that, on average, 5,000 pupils played truant in London schools each day, compared to 5,700 last year.
