Religious studies teachers fear their subject will be taken over by the Government’s new citizenship lessons, according to a survey on behalf of two leading Church of England educational trusts.
RE is in danger of losing its spiritual side and must resist pressure to concentrate on the social and ethical aspects of religion under the new citizenship lessons, warned a survey of more than 250 RE teachers and advisers.
Citizenship and personal, social and health education will deprive religious education of curriculum time, reported the vast majority of respondents in the survey by Church of England trusts, Culham College Institute and St Gabriel’s Trust.
