Teaching children about global warming is “irresponsible”, according to the Scientific Alliance, a green-sceptics’ group which has condemned the Government’s decision to send copies of Al Gore’s campaigning film An Inconvenient Truth to schools.

The former presidential candidate’s award-winning documentary on rising world temperatures is dismissed as a “slick polemic” which uses “a combination of incomplete science and emotional imagery”. The alliance calls it “an unbalanced approach to educating children”.

Martin Livermore, its director, and author of Climate Change: a Guide to the Scientific Uncertainties and former critic of the anti-GM crop movement, suggested the film should be shown alongside Channel 4‘s The Great Global Warming Swindle. “To promote only one point of view on such a contentious issue is wrongheaded,” he said.

Al Gore’s climate change film is to be shown in all Scotland’s secondaries.

The Scottish Executive, with Learning and Teaching Scotland and ScottishPower, will also provide educational resources based on the film.

These will be piloted towards the end of this academic year, with the full programme expected to be ready by next year.
