Sites can be classified into two broad types, the first being guides to headings one might examine in detail, the other offering detailed information. A starting point would be the exam boards, where you can download assessment criteria. Most of these have links to help-sites where virtually everything can be found. See www.edexcel.org.uk; www.ocr.org.uk; www.wjec.co.uk; www.aqa.org.uk.

lwww.bbc.co.ukschoolsgcsebitesizedesign - BBC Bitesize is notable for its coverage of each study area and is one of the few sites offering useful information on textiles. The sections on electronics, systems, food, graphics, resistant materials and textiles each feature a revision checklist with more details via sub-menus. Tiresome cartoon graphics, but all the information is there.

lwww.btinternet.comhognosesamgcsepage.html - useful for materials, processes and terminology, with a host of facts presented in fun style and some depth. The functional design is easy to navigate. The mechanism button leads to a comprehensive section with text and diagrams.

lwww.techitoutuk.comtio8knowledgematerialsmatlprop.html - additional useful definitions for resistant materials.

lwww.dtonline.org - comprehensive sections on electronics, packaging, environment, food, pneumatics, mechanisms and manufacturing projects. The site is easy to move around. The plain style is a little repetitive, but graphics students may benefit from the “Packaging Designer” section.

lwww.flying-pig.co.ukmechanismsindex.html - fun graphics and clear diagrams that are popular and effective with students at all stages. For effective revision of mechanisms a visit to the animated illustrations would be hard to beat.

lwww.technologystudent.comelec1elecex.htm - for electronics (and systems and control) revision the simple menu provides clear and understandable coverage of everything from switches to logic gates and simple circuits.

lOther sites: www.proaxis.comiguanalabs Begtut.htm - an alternative electronics site worth a visit by students eager to check through simple calculations as well as basic facts; www.dtonline.orgappsinfopageapp.exe?341010 - food technology revision supported with straightforward references to syllabus topics; www.mmeade.comcheatindex.html - detailed nutrition information; http:mysite. wanadoo-members.co.ukdesignandtechsearchfoodtech. html - links to other useful food technology sites; www.foodtech.org.uk - sound base for revision and reference; www.dthub.co.uk - a DT search engine supporting sites offering revision. Type in the topic and retrieve a host of suitable links.

Bill Richmond is head of design and technology at St John’s School in Epping and runs the website www.design-technology.info which features an extensive revision section
