It’s easy enough to call television a window on the world, but everyone has a right to know how the outlook was chosen and what other views there might be. The British Film Institute website has some very good resources, suggesting different ways of investigating citizenship issues by using TV. Window on the World? contains clear accounts of how TV programming is controlled and shaped, together with thoughtful discussions about formats and genres. Lesson plans and classroom activities range from simulating broadcasts to analysis of the language of the moving image.
