'Twas ever thus

The letter by Janine Fitzpatrick (TESS, December 13) strikes a chord with those concerned about the educational achievement of all children regardless of race or creed. It is a fact that the United Kingdom is a multiracial, multicultural land, 'twas ever thus, 'twill ever be so.

Our future depends upon maximising the achievement of all our young people. It is for this reason that securing the self-esteem of every young person is so vital. Self- esteem is a precursor for achievement and it requires us to challenge easy stereotypes and promote measures to ensure equality of treatment.

The concept of citizenship does have a place within the curriculum, but it must not be constrained by a particular view that may seek to deny Britain's rich cultural past and its varied cultural present.
