Candidates, teachers and invigilators all over Scotland have been struggling to cope with what the Scottish Qualifications Authority lovingly calls “coincidents”, those awful days on which pupils are up for two separate exams, such as French and graphic communications - exam timetablers clearly thinking that Gallic and techy drawing would never be chosen in tandem.

It requires separate timings, guarding candidates over lunchtime in case the secrets of the paper leak out. One youngster did his best to explain himself: “Please miss, I’m a coincidence.”
