The South Eastern Education and Library Board in Northern Ireland, due to disappear under a Government plan, is set to win a reprieve. The province’s Education Minister, Michael Ancram, is expected to announce next week that the five education boards will be left intact.
There was much opposition to the change, which would have hardened religious divisions by creating two predominantly Catholic boards, and two mainly Protestant.
Mr Ancram is expected to carry on with other controversial changes such as putting further education directly under his department’s control and changing the funding of voluntary grammar schools.
