JEAN Gemmell has been elected general secretary of the Professional Association of Teachers in a ballot of the 31,500 members. She was headteacher of Fernwood comprehensive school in Nottingham before joining the union as senior professional officer in 1999, and became acting general secretary in April when general secretary Kay Driver moved on to chief executive of the British Horse Society. Mrs Gemmell will spend her summer holidays directing Donizetti at the Buxton opera house.
