HEADTEACHERS’ leader David Hart urged parents not to make school uniform policy a “battleground” after the Equal Opportunities Commission supported legal action against a school which refuses to let girls wear trousers.

The commission is backing Claire Hale, professor in health care studies at Leeds University, in her attempt to force Whickham comprehensive in Gateshead, Tyne and Wear, to let her 14-year-old daughter Jo wear trousers.

The school, which fears “very serious financial implications” if it loses the case, has been given two months to review its policy or county court proceedings will begin.

Mr Hart, general secretary of the National Association of Head-teachers, said:

“If parents and pupils have problems they should try to resolve them amicably without resorting to the courts.”
