Unions are already knocking at the door

THE Educational Institute of Scotland has called on Henry McLeish to continue the Executive's "open approach" which has allowed teacher leaders access to the corridors of power. Ronnie Smith, the union's general secretary, wants an early meeting.

The unions have been significantly brought into the inner tabernacles since the devolutionary dispensation was established. They have regular meetins with the Inspectorate, sit on the key Higher Still liaison group and are playing a leading role in the negotiations that have followed the McCrone inquiry.

Mr Smith says there are several urgent issues that require attention, apart from resolving the exams crisis, such as the post-McCrone settlement, Higher Still implementation and the new 5-14 guidelines that are due this month.
