Lecturers vowed last week not to play their part in increasing the number of students in further and higher education by 500,000 by the millennium unless the Government gave them more money.

David Triesman, general secretary of the Association of University Teachers, said that either the Government funded the expansion properly, with a statutory pay review body for higher education staff, or it would not happen.
