Education fringe meetings were livened up by problems with exploding light bulbs, background jazz music and noisy neighbours. Meetings to discuss grammar schools and academies were held at the Creations night club, next to its underlit retro-style dance floor. Steve Sinnott, NUT general secretary, was alarmed by the poles in one corner. "This is the first time I've ever been to a pole-dancing club," he said.
