RESEARCH by Dr Kathleen Kiernan from the London School of Economics showed that more than half of cohabiting couples with children will split up by the time a child is five compared with only 8 per cent of married couples. In 1998, 38 per cent of children were born outside marriage compared to 26 per cent in 1988, according to the Government’s Population Trends statistics.
