Use the F-word

ESTELLE would be pleased by the fierce competition between schools in the American state of Florida. Losers with poor results get branded "F-Grade", while the best get millions of dollars.

When Mollie E. Ray elementary school in Florida got its second "F-Grade" this spring, pupils were offered vouchers to transfer to other schools and closure looked imminent. Then, in an audacious piece of spin, principal Joy Taylor decided that "F equals fantastic", a slogan she had emblazoned on teachers' shirts. Enrolments are holding up surprisingly well!

Failing schools on this side of the pond can now apply to the Diary for a makeover set containing "WE ARE SPECIAL! (measures)" T-shirts. Hurry while stocks last!
