'Value-added' rankings

School principals in Kenya want a new "value-added" ranking system in national examinations. At their annual conference in Mombasa, the secondary school heads called for the current system to be replaced with one where schools are rated according to how students improve over a four- year period, based on their performance in the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education. The heads are concerned that the current ranking of individual candidates does not reflect the input of teachers and schools and encourages "unhealthy competition".
