Bernard O’Keefe in “Alive to Criticism” (TES, March 24) writes persuasively on the teaching of contemporary texts, the value of coursework at A-level and the exciting work that students produce when writing 3,000-word essays on topics of their own choice.

Unfortunately, this particular syllabus at the Government’s behest has had to cut the coursework element from 50 per cent to 20 per cent. Did Bernard O’Keefe mention “progress” somewhere?
