RE Curriculum Pack for Global Citizenship Live Caringly (key stage 1) Live Thoughtfully (KS2). pound;12.99 each.

Live Responsibly (KS3) pound;14.99. Christian AidTel: 020 7523 2229. www.christian-aid.org.uk.

These boxed teaching packs each contain three posters (key stage 1 and 2) and a 12-section video (KS3), linked to helpfully detailed teaching notes, including photocopiable worksheets and pupil activities. They aim to be core to both RE and the citizenship guidelines, planned with progression in view. Parts could be adapted for use in collective worship.

Each of the six QCA major religions contributes its stories or key quotes to the theme of the natural world. I have some reservations about this thematic treatment of religions.

It could be mishandled at classroom level into a fudge in which all religions are presented as really the same, friendly, tame, upholders of the natural order, rather than demonstrating that religions have massive differences, but do converge on some areas, responsible attitudes towards the planet being one.

But these packs recognise religions as globally significant. This is particularly important when the citizenship stake has also rightly been raised into global and not merely British citizenship. Whatever difficulties the British seem to be having with religions at present, religions are alive and well on the surface of the planet, potent forces for good and bad, and by tapping into one of the convergent strands in religions, concern for the natural order, Christian Aid offers a resilient resource which implies that the planet is our “city”.
