THE school where headteacher Philip Lawrence died defending a pupil against a knife attack could close following further violence.
A private-sector taskforce will be sent into St George’s Roman Catholic school in Maida Vale, London. Headteacher Margaret Ryan agreed at the end of last week to take early retirement - just days after police were called to break up a fight between two boys, one of whom required hospital treatment.
Westminster educaton authority announced that the school’s half-term holiday would be extended for a week pending the arrival of the taskforce from Nord Anglia. The taskforce is to take over the leadership of the school and “stabilise” it.
A decision on St George’s future, with closure as an option, was likely to be taken within a month, Westminster’s education chairman Simon Milton said.
The school was declared as failing by inspectors two years ago.
