Waiting in vain

I’m a qualified teacher who has been in primary teaching for three years. I qualified with a QTS BEd and a specialism in PE. I’ve been my school’s PE co-ordinator for two years. Can I ask my head for a management point or a TLR for next year? I have looked at jobs advertised at other schools for my position and they offer this. My head has not approached me and I was wondering if I should wait to be asked, but doubt this will happen.

In the autumn term last year your school should have gone through a complete staffing review to create the new structure ahead of the introduction of the TLRs and the phasing out of management points. Your head should have made it clear whether responsibility for PE was to be awarded a TLR or not. If you know nothing about this, ask the representative from your professional association what happened. Suppose your school cannot afford to make TLR payments outside of a few subjects.

Either you accept this or start applying for posts in schools where they have reached a different conclusion and are able to reward responsibility in the subject. But check whether others on management points are set to have them taken away after the transition phase comes to an end in three years’ time.
