The Government has set out plans to make sure every child gets the best start in life by tackling child poverty. A consultation document makes clear that tackling child poverty is not just about minimum standards of living but about making society fairer and more productive. A Child Poverty Bill will enshrine in legislation the Government’s promise to eradicate child poverty by 2020, setting targets to reduce relative poverty, ensure adequate living standards and reduce persistent poverty. It is considering whether local authorities should also have to set targets.
