Pupils from around the country travelled on environmentally friendly transport to Kenilworth earlier this month to attend a national Eco-Schools event.

Warwickshire was chosen to host the event in recognition of the authority’s sustainable schools programme. More than 180 schools in the county have developed individual eco-projects involving pupils and teachers.

At Bishops Itchington Primary, the infants’ classrooms have a caddy for composting the remains of their fruit. At Harbury Primary, pupils monitor and record their use of electricity and water. And at Bilton School, pupils have created a “peace garden” where they can go to sit quietly. The herbaceous border has the words “every child matters” spelled out in flowers.

More than 1,500 teachers and pupils from primaries and secondaries around the country attended the Eco-Schools event, held at the National Agricultural Centre in Stoneleigh Park, near Kenilworth. Warwickshire County Council arranged for its pupils to travel to the event in eco- friendly coaches.

Participants gave presentations about their schools’ eco-projects and attended workshops and “ask the expert” sessions on how to improve their environmental friendliness. The Government wants all schools to be fully sustainable by 2020.
