Ask a Year 6 pupil if they find their Sats revision fun, and it’s likely that the answer will be “no”.

Ask them if want to star and create their own music video, however, and there may be more enthusiasm.

So, in the run-up to the exams, why not combine the two?

At Brockhurst Primary School in Gosport, that’s what Year 6 teachers Jaime Hill and Sarah Cox did.

“Year 6 can be a bit of a slog with the Sats, and can become quite boring, so I wanted to uplift the students while making revision more fun for them,” Hill told the Portsmouth news.

The two teachers replaced the lyrics of One Republic’s Counting Stars, with spelling, grammar and maths facts.

“The children absolutely loved the idea of creating a music video,” says Hill. “It was still an educational process - the students got creative with storyboards for the parts they were in, and the rehearsals mean that the lyrics are now stuck in their heads.

“It is at a point now where, when the pupils get stuck, they sing the line to remind themselves of what to do. Of course, they can’t sing in the actual exams, but I think the song has had a massively positive impact on them.”
