The 2018 World Cup might be taking place in Russia, but football is definitely coming home this year if the pupils at St Michael’s CE Academy in Wakefield have anything to say about it.

The primary school has released what is possibly the best football single ever produced in England (sorry, The Lightning Seeds and Ant and Dec) ahead of the nation’s first match against Tunisia tonight.

In their music video, England work their way through the tournament, winning Group G and beating Poland in the last 16, before successfully taking on Brazil and Portugal. This is followed by a victorious penalty shootout (5-3!) against Germany - who else?

Various other past World Cup ghosts are laid to rest in the video: Beckham receives a yellow card as Diego Simeone is sent off, Lineker tries to alert the bench to Gazza’s tears and even Chris Kamara makes a comedy appearance.

“I wanted to write a song about looking to the summer, and hope in the face of adversity,” says Year 6 teacher Paul Tattersfield, who is behind the project. “After speaking with the children at school, it became a World Cup single, and over the next few months it became what you see and hear today.”

The video can be found on YouTube and has already been viewed over 3,500 times.
