The Central Council of Physical Recreation (CCPR) and the Department for Education and Skills have jointly published practical guidance for teachers and youth workers who take groups of young people on outings on or near water.
Most of the fatal accidents on school trips over the past five years have involved water, so this an area where groups leaders need more guidance.
Group Safety at Water Margins outlines sensible advice to help group leaders minimise risks to their group and themselves when leading activities in which children will be working near water.
The leaflet was prepared by a CCPR-led working group including teachers, voluntary youth organisations and outdoor leadership and safety bodies.
