The new Water for Life gallery at Kew Bridge Steam Museum, Brentford, west London, reveals how water is vital for life; without it, disease and death arrive. Displays include “Down Below”, about the development of sewers and sanitation control. Through peep holes visitors hear sounds, catch whiffs and glimpse a rat. They can even - with hands in gloves - try to find a hidden object in a cesspit.

Other exhibits include a modern robot used to find and get rid of obstructions; Time Line, about the development of the water supply and hygiene system; and Clean Water, about water filtration today from river to tap and how rivers and water supplies became polluted.
