We aim to offer skills solutions

I read your article on specialised diplomas with great interest It's particularly interesting because on the very day it was published, the Department for Education and Skills, the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority and the Sector Skills Development Agency jointly issued a press release outlining the content of each of the first five diplomas - work which has been completed by all the sector skills councils on time and to budget.

Yes, the project is complex. Yes, it is true that one of the biggest issues faced by the whole project is ensuring coherence and accountability between organisations.

But all parties take this extremely seriously, and the sector skills councils are proud to be at the heart of the biggest shake-up of the qualification system for young people since the introduction of GCSEs in 1988.

As H L Mencken once said: "For every problem, there is a solution that is simple, neat, and wrong." Our job is to make sure that this solution isn't the one we end up with.
