We must find a place for religion in education

Laura McInerney’s excellent piece on religion in US classrooms (“The godless delusion”, Feature, 31 January) provides superb material for anyone promoting religious education in the UK. Try to eradicate passionate belief from school and it either pops up elsewhere like moles under a lawn (for example, evolution versus creationism) or its absence leaves a sterile vacuum (“Winterval”, anyone?). It is better to offer students the chance to understand and weigh up the contributions and truth claims of faith and belief in a dedicated subject.

Now, if only there were government money to support this...
