Weston Road High School, Stafford. http:atschool.eduweb.co.ukwestonroadindex.html
David Perks, Weston Road’s head of art, started three years ago with one PC and an Internet connection borrowed from the French department. Now there are 16 linked-up PCs, digital cameras and a scanner. Pupils help at a lunchtime club, but Mr Perks, who is self-taught, does most of the work. He is proud of the slide shows featuring pupils’ work or activities. “This reduces initial download time while allowing the site to deliver a large quantity of images that give pupils ownrship and presence.”
David Perks’s tips * Use prepared documents. Newsletters and policy documents can easily be converted for the Internet if they are already stored on computer.
* Learn from the Web. All the information you need to develop quality sites is available online. Study the code of pages you admire or check out sites explaining technique (try Professional Web Design and HTML Tutorials at http:junior.apk.netjbarta readme.html).
* Avoid creating pages that will take a long time to download or require special plug-ins. The Internet is not fast and people are not patient.
