The winners of this year’s Becta ICT in Practice Awards reveal to The TES their favourite websites. Here is a selection: Lesley Marwood (New To Teaching) uses the French TV5 website in conjunction with Channel 825 on Sky Digital for teaching ideas that she can use with French video clips on her PCprojector set-up.

Val Brown (Special Needs Primary) is an enthusiastic user of the Clicker grid program from Crick Software. This software is extremely popular in primary and special needs education, and the community of users is very well represented on the Crick website where Val uses the “wealth” of grids collated by Crick for its customers.

www.learninggrids.comuk Bob Overton (Special Needs Secondary) is well-known for the excellent digital video work he does with his students. One of his favourite websites is run by Film Education. There is plenty of support and advice material for media and subject work here, much of it free.

Judith Lisgarten (Special Needs Post-16) likes the BBC’s online magazine for special needs, Ouch, and describes it as: “A clever and often hilarious magazine, written by disabled people, which challenges society’s view of disability.” You can also subscribe to the Ouch email newsletter.

Jane Finch (Innovation and Change) recommends L8R, an interactive drama for teenagers operating on the internet and television (BBC Learning Zone). The target audience (12-16) is encouraged to participate by voting on critical outcomes and advising the characters on the internet.

Elaine Wyllie (Teaching Primary) is a fan of the “travelling teddy bear” movement that has proved so popular in primary schools. Steve Ungi (Teaching Secondary) transformed design and technology teaching at his school. He draws some of his inspiration from Design and Technology Online (set up by Dial Solutions and the National Association of Advisers and Inspectors in Design and Technology, NAAIDT, and now supported by other major Damp;T organisations).
