Six projects - “Displaying the Written Word”; “Getting the Message Across”, “Victorian Britain”, “Special Books”, “Newspapers”, and “Traditional Stories” - can now be found at Words Alive!, an online resource for literacy teaching on the British Library’s Living Words site at www.education.bl.uk The rest of the site comprises lesson plans linked to images of items in the British Library’s collections, a teachers’ zone and a children’s zone where pupils can work independently.

From lessons on Jabberwocky to a list of Shakespeare websites, English Online www.englishonline.co.uk offers teaching materials for secondary education. It includes a studyroom, teacher’s centre, lesson plans, schemes of work and discussion forums covering language, literature, literacy and speaking and listening, edited by an experienced teacher and examiner, Tom Rank.

English Online also offers a free serviceactivity for teachers and students entitled Writers Online www.englishonline.co.ukwriterswriter.html. Students are invited to take part in the literary activity that the guest author sets on the web site. Every student that participates gets feedback online from the author. This month the guest author is Elizabeth Laird.
