Refereeing qualification
A new qualification will enable school pupils and college students to become football referees. The Scottish Football Association and the Scottish Qualifications Authority have launched the Refereeing Professional Development Award, which is sponsored by Specsavers and will be available next year. It will assess fitness as well as practical skills, and show how to produce match and discipline reports.
City of Glasgow College launched
Scotland’s newest and largest further education college, the pound;6.8 million City of Glasgow College, has been officially launched. It was on time and under budget, despite a technically challenging building project on the River Clyde. It is the only Scottish college offering the full range of short and mainstream marine courses, and includes a marine skills centre, jetty and pontoon.
Stars flock to Edinburgh
The world’s most star-studded conference was held in Edinburgh this week, with delegates paying pound;3,700 to attend. TED Global, which has moved its base from Oxford, attracted speakers such as historian Niall Ferguson, Hollywood actress Thandie Newton, economist Tim Harford, and science journalists Ben Goldacre and Malcolm Gladwell. A “fringe” event dubbed FED charged delegates only pound;5.
Former head in tribunal victory
An employment tribunal has found in favour of a former primary depute head, in the latest twist of her long-running dispute with Dundee City Council. Linda Ross, who has been struck off by the General Teaching Council for Scotland, came to the attention of TESS in 2007 when her husband made allegations about pupil violence. The council is awaiting details of the judgment before commenting.
MySQA online has mass appeal
Some 44,000 candidates had registered with the MySQA online exam results service last week, and 35,000 had activated their accounts. The deadline for activating accounts is 5pm today. Those who do so will receive their exam results via text message and email by 9am on 4 August; all candidates will receive their results by post the same day.
