8-14 March 2014

Saturday

Feminine principles

Speaking at the Women of the World festival in London on International Women’s Day, educational activist Malala Yousafzai urged young people to use social media to raise awareness of important social issues.

Sunday

To infinity and beyond

The first man in space, Russian cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin, was born on this day in 1934. His historic flight in Vostok 1 took place in 1961. He died just seven years later in a plane crash.

Monday

Figure hugging

What did 0 say to 8? “Nice belt.” It was the start of TES Connect’s Maths Week, with numerical activities aplenty available for teachers on the website. Hard to believe anyone ever thought sums were boring.

Tuesday

Written invitation

Adam Braun, founder of education charity Pencils of Promise, was due to address the SXSW film and music festival in Austin, Texas. His organisation has built 170 schools in developing countries in the past five years.

Wednesday

Seasoned protesters

On this day in 1930, Gandhi and 78 followers set out on foot to protest against the salt tax imposed by the British Raj. The 24-day march led to demonstrations and drew attention to the Indian independence movement.

Thursday

Candles in the darkness

A candlelit vigil to demonstrate solidarity with Syria was held in London’s Trafalgar Square. It was one of a series of events organised by UK charity Oxfam to mark the conflict’s third anniversary.

Friday

Blazing saddles

Jockey silks on, riding whips out - and they’re off! The Cheltenham Gold Cup is the climax of the jump-racing season in England, with punters making last year’s winner Bobs Worth the favourite this time round too.

15-21 March 2014

Saturday

Schools of rock

Germany’s biggest school band competition reaches its climax today at the Musikmesse in Frankfurt. The winners of today’s final will tour the US and China and travel to the international SchoolJam final in London.

Sunday

Mobot wars

Double Olympic champion Mo Farah will be taking part in the New York City half-marathon today, as part of his training for his first full competitive marathon in London next month. Go, Mo!

Monday

Answering Ireland’s call

It’s St Patrick’s Day, and millions of people will be celebrating in Ireland and around the world, including the 250,000 expected to turn out in New York City for its famous annual parade. Anything for a good craic.

Tuesday

High-tech talks

It’s not all about coding: an education technology policy summit in Washington DC, US, will also be discussing subjects ranging from using computer games for learning to protecting students’ data.

Wednesday

What’s in the public purse?

The UK Budget is to be announced today. Funding for schools has been relatively protected since the recession began but the education world will find out George Osborne’s latest plans this afternoon.

Thursday

Continental drift

Heads of European states will be meeting in Brussels for the six-monthly summit. On the agenda is the mismatch between the skills that young people are leaving school with and what employers are looking for.

Friday

A cushty number

Former England captain and all-round footballing legend David Beckham will be taking part in a special episode of television comedy Only Fools and Horses to raise money for UK charity Sport Relief.
