The first man in space, Russian cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin, was born on this day in 1934. His historic flight in Vostok 1 took place in 1961. He died just seven years later in a plane crash.

On this day in 1930, Gandhi and 78 followers set out on foot to protest against the salt tax imposed by the British Raj. The 24-day march led to demonstrations and drew attention to the Indian independence movement.

A candlelit vigil to demonstrate solidarity with Syria was held in London’s Trafalgar Square. It was one of a series of events organised by UK charity Oxfam to mark the conflict’s third anniversary.
