This week, next week

25-31 October 2014

Feeling fruity

It was half-term at last and what better way to celebrate than with a tasty treat? Bramley Apple Pie Week aimed to promote the benefits of cooking with the tart British fruit - custard optional.

Road rage

A Buckinghamshire village is taking legal action to evict a free school that plans to cater for 900 Sikh pupils, it emerged. Residents of Stoke Poges claim that the school would cause traffic problems.

When school's out

Backed by education secretary Nicky Morgan, the NAHT headteachers' union launched new guidelines on when pupils can be out of school during term-time, covering weddings, funerals and religious events.

Cops and nippers

"Wotcha gonna do, officer, tell my mum?" According to a report published by the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Children, there is a "lack of mutual respect" between the police force and children.

Tough questions

Education secretary Nicky Morgan attended the National Children and Adult Services conference in Manchester to discuss issues including how to protect children from sexual exploitation.

Never forget

Time for a Russian history lesson: it was the day of remembrance for the country's victims of political repression. The focus was a mass grave from Stalin's "great purge" of the 1930s; it is now a shrine to the victims.

Flying free

Today is the 74th anniversary of the end of the Battle of Britain, the first major campaign fought entirely by air. As Winston Churchill said: "Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few."

1-7 November 2014

A cracking day out

You can't make an omelette without breaking a few eggs, the saying goes. Well, more than a few eggs will be broken during the annual Giant Omelette Celebration in Abbeville in Louisiana, US.

Save our souls

After the fun of Halloween, All Souls' Day is a rather more sombre commemoration. Catholics pray for the souls of the dead who are stuck in purgatory, being cleansed of their sins.

Food, glorious food

Ditch the Turkey Twizzlers and celebrate healthy school grub during National School Meals Week. Run by the Local Authority Caterers Association, the event aims to promote nutritious school dinners.

True grit

Is character education a waste of time? Thinktank Policy Exchange will host a debate on the motion featuring free-school founder Toby Young and Anthony Seldon, master of Wellington College in Berkshire.

Where's the fire?

Remember, remember to take advantage of this anniversary and teach your pupils all about Guy Fawkes and the Gunpowder Plot. We see no reason why gunpowder treason should ever be forgot.

Making a splash

Gay role models will abound at the 2014 Stonewall Awards in London. Olympic diving star Tom Daley has been nominated in the hero of the year category for his YouTube coming-out video.

Deck the halls

For the lovers, Christmas can't come too early. For the haters, it never seems to go away. Harrods is due to hold its lavish annual Christmas parade at the store in Knightsbridge, West London.
