Whether you are a fan of literature, classical music, jazz, stage acts or films, Edinburgh has something to entertain you. TES Scotland reviewers look at what is on offer in the spectrum of annual summer festivals to interest young audiences

For the second year, the Edinburgh International Film Festival has prepared a schools’ screening guide for teachers and students. The programme offers a range of foreign language films and talks from professionals in the industry.

The programme is designed to complement subjects such as media studies, modern studies and modern languages, giving an insight into other cultures and international opinions.

Promises reflects Middle Eastern conflicts through children’s eyes; Samia follows a French Algerian girl struggling to live with two cultures; In July is a romantic comedy about a boy from Hamburg and his Eastern European odyssey to find and win a girl’s heart; and Chain Camera is a candid portrait of American teenagers talking about race, gender, drugs, violence and sex.

Four sessions lift the lid on the film industry: “Marketing the Movies: Pop Music and Promotion” explores the link between music, film and fashion; a British Board of Film Classification event explains regulation and censorship issues; and “Internet Revolution” explores cyberspace.

The schools’ guide, which has been distributed to secondary schools throughout Edinburgh and the Lothians, offers detailed information on each film and event.
