SCHOOLGIRLS think the Government’s campaign to tackle the high rate of teenage pregnancy is “patronising” and ” out of touch”, according to a poll of 42,000 girls aged 12 to 16 by Internet company wickedcolours.com.
The girls said the pound;60 million campaign to halve Britain’s teenage pregnancy rate was a ” waste of money” and would be better spent on advice clinics.
Meanwhile, a pilot scheme in Manchester will encourage pregnant girls to consider abortion after the Deprtment of Health expressed concern that many pregnant teenagers were unaware it was an option.
Rachel Garbutt, a member of the Government’s advisory commitee on teenage pregnancy, and a director of the charity, Brook, said nurses, doctors or teachers would talk to girls about three options available: having the baby, abortion or giving up the baby for adoption. But the Society for the Protection of the Unborn Child said this was, in effect, promoting abortion.
