Movies tend to claim the “summer blockbuster” headlines, but in this weather kids are much more likely to be chilling on the beach or lounging in the shade with a good book, surely? With this in mind, we thought we would list some of the major new books aimed at children that have been released for summer, or are about to be released. They will no doubt be among those your pupils will be bringing into school, and perhaps will be ones you want to cast your eye over, too (You should also check out our extensive book reviews by kids for kids).

1. Secrets of a Sun King by Emma Carroll

(Faber and Faber, age 9+, out now)

This is the eighth novel from former English teacher and “queen of historical fiction” Emma Carroll. For any students who revel in history, this tale of Egyptian pharaohs and ancient curses - set in London in 1922 - is sure to be a winner. Readers may also want to check out her award-winning last effort, Letters from the Lighthouse, which was released last year.

2. Business for Beginners by Lara Bryan and Rose Hall

(Usborne, age 8+, out in September)

A bit of non-fiction here for any aspiring Richard Bransons. The long summer weeks could be spent creating the foundation of a future business empire, thanks to this book, which explores the world of business with engaging illustrations, comic strips and diagrams aimed to engage children aged 8-12.

3. A Darkness of Dragons by S.A. Patrick

(Usborne, age 9+, out in September)

The first children’s novel from horror thriller writer S.A. Patrick is set in a fantasy world inspired by the tale of the Pied Piper of Hamelin. For young readers who can’t get enough of Tolkien and C.S. Lewis, this new series is sure to keep them entertained.

4. V&A Introduces: Frida Kahlo

(Puffin, out now)

Filled with paintings, illustrations and photographs, this comprehensive and beautifully presented book will teach budding artists a great deal about the fashion, art and life of the Mexican icon. It’s tied in with the V&A’s new Kahlo exhibition and considers what made her so unique.

5. Child I by Steve Tasane

(Faber and Faber, age 9+, out now)

Former teacher Steve Tasane is now a performance poet who runs rap and poetry workshops in schools around the UK, but his new novel - about life in a refugee camp - explores universal themes. The novel doesn’t shy away from difficult experiences, but it is full of hope and sure to move young readers, while educating them about this important topic.

6. Are We All Lemmings and Snowflakes? by Holly Bourne

(Usborne, age 14+, out 9 August)

Holly Bourne’s tale of mental ill-health, friendship and compassion draws on her experience of working with teenagers with mental illnesses. Humorous and honest, the story of one girl’s attempt to fix others and herself is sure to resonate with many teens and will be of interest to teachers, particularly those in lead pastoral roles in schools.

7. Long Way Down by Jason Reynolds

(Faber and Faber, young adult, out now)

Written in verse and arriving on a wave of excitement after causing a storm in the US, Jason Reynolds’ novel is likely to leave a lasting impression on young readers. It explores gang crime and race relations in the US through incredible linguistic feats, and illustrations from UK artist Chris Priestley.

Elliot Douglas is a student at the University of St Andrews
