THE scattergraphs plot deprivation (represented by the percentage of pupils known to be eligible for free school meals in each local education authority) against the performance of pupils in this year’s national tests.

The test figure is the percentage of pupils achieving level 4 (key stage 2) or level 5 (key stage 3). For each key stage the percentages for English, maths and science have been added together to produce a single aggregate score.

The trendline

provides an indication of how well each authority scored in comparison with areas of similar deprivation. How many points above or below the line its score falls is given in the table (left).
